About the research group
Under the direction of Dr. Albert A. Antolin, a new junior principal investigator affiliated to Oncobell, a new multidisciplinary line of research has been created that aims to discover more effective anti-cancer therapeutics (e.g. Antolin AA, et al. Cell Chemical Biology, 2021). The research line will have a strong focus on small-molecule multi-target drug discovery with close collaboration between computational and medicinal chemists and also with cancer biologists and oncologists to perform innovative early drug discovery. Being located at the proCURE Department, the initial focus will be to develop small molecules that tackle cancer drug resistance mechanisms including resistance to immunotherapy.
About the role
The postholder will be responsible of designing and synthesizing new compounds using a range of organic chemistry techniques, designing and selecting appropriate synthetic routes, reagends and conditions to enable efficient compound preparation. He/She will also be responsible of optimising routes/methods to enable multi-gram compound synthesis, purifying and characterising new compounds and analysing and interpreting project data to enable the informed design of new compounds. The postholder will also develop and implement approaches to enable the parallel synthesis of focussed arrays of 20-30 compounds, contribute to testing the new compounds in physicochemical assays (e.g. solubility, stability) and to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team including computational chemists and biologists. The postholder must also maintain accurate experimental records, maintain safe and effective laboratory working practices and contribute towards the safe running of the lab; maintain knowledge of new developments in synthetic chemistry and continue to expand medicinal chemistry know-how; prepare and present results at internal and external meetings; prepare data for patent applications and publications; contribute to the day to day running of the lab and assist with training and development of more junior staff members. There might be an opportunity to develop skills of in vitro and in cellulo compound testing.
Proven experience and high competency in organic synthesis with up to date knowledge of synthetic reagents, synthetic methods and understanding of reaction mechanisms; and ability to cratively problem solve in synthetic organic chemistry.
Highly competent with organic chemistry purification and characterization techniques (e.g. solid phase chromatography, ion exchange, HPLC, TLC, NRM, MS)
Education and training
Master’s Degree in Chemistry or equivalent
Skilled in the use of synthetic database searching tools (e.g. SciFinder) and their use to inform the design of new organic compounds.
Effective collaboration skills and ability to work productively with others
Ability to present analysis results clearly orally and in written reports
Good command of the English language

PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry
Ability to use medicinal chemistry design principles and interpret biological data to design improved compounds
Knowledge / Experience in drug discovery
Knowledge / Experience in cancer biology
Evidence of independent intellectual and practical contributions to solving challenging synthetic organic chemistry problems.
